An old Franciscan Convent
The Pousada de Beja, São Francisco, is a hotel right in the center of the city. It is situated in an old XIII century convent, the result of which is a majestic architectural work which represents religious and gothic architecture.
The first registers of the convent date back to 10th November 1268, a date which marks the emergence of the S. Francisco Community in Beja under the initiative of the Captain General Lopo Esteves and the Councillors Diogo Fernandes and Vasco Martins.
Opened in 1994, this historic luxury hotel in Beja has kept the original features of the old building. It contains many spacious areas and high ceilings with predominating white walls and decor of local crafts and antiques, giving it a warm welcoming to visitors of the Pousada.
In the old central nave contemporary art expositions give life to the walls. The hallways, ample and stripped, connect the old monks’ chambers which have been remodeled and transformed into welcoming bedrooms with views of the pool and garden.
Combining convenience with history, each room boasts extreme good taste, tranquility, and privacy. The acclimatized rooms are embellished in warm colours and wooden furniture, and every room has cable TV, a mini bar, and a private bathroom.
The Pousada’s restaurant is an authentic place to try the best Portuguese cuisine. In this welcoming spacious place it is possible to savor a number of the culinary delights of the Alentejo region. Located in the heart of Alentejo, the Pousada's staff can help their guests plan a number of diverse activities including bicycle rides, horse treks, and hikes.
The Beja Castle is only 700 meters from the Pousada de Beja and the Queen Dona Leonor Museum is found a mere 300 meters away.
The Pousada de Beja is a true oasis in the Alentejo plain. Come and relive these old memories, with almost 800 years of history, in a real haven of the Alentejo region.

The restaurant of the Pousada de Beja occupies space that was once the refectory of the Franciscan friars.
With a capacity for 62 people, this large space is also available to hold an event or group on the occasion of choice.
We recommend our famous Convent Cod, the specialty of the Pousada and we invite you to try our buffet of convent desserts, without forgetting the distinct Dourada soup.
If your preference should be the typical lamb, then feast yourself on our Lamb à la Sheppard and accompany it with a regional wine from our menu.
The hot nights of summer are passed by the pool with the summer barbeques to enjoy on Saturday nights with a mixture of entertainment!
